Compost science gets reduced to “greens and browns” so often that the actual number behind it - the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio - rarely gets explained. Understanding it makes troubleshooting a slow or smelly pile much faster than guessing.
Fast, hot composting happens close to a 25:1 to 30:1 carbon-to-nitrogen ratio by weight. Most individual materials are far from that ratio on their own - grass clippings run around 15:1 to 20:1 (nitrogen-heavy), while dry leaves run 40:1 to 80:1 (carbon-heavy) - which is why mixing material types matters more than the total volume in the bin.
In practical terms, for every five-gallon bucket of kitchen scraps or grass clippings added to a pile, adding roughly three to four buckets of dry leaves, shredded cardboard, or straw keeps the mix in a reasonable range without needing to weigh anything. This is the origin of the “three to four parts brown to one part green” rule of thumb.
Too much nitrogen (not enough browns) shows up as a wet, smelly, slimy pile that never heats up properly despite regular turning. Too much carbon (not enough greens) shows up as a pile that stays cool and barely breaks down at all, sometimes for a full season, because there isn’t enough nitrogen to fuel the microbial activity that generates heat.
Correcting either problem is usually as simple as adding a layer of the underrepresented material and turning the pile - there’s rarely a need to start over, even when a pile has been sitting wrong for weeks.
